Welcome
to Yarra Valley Decking Cambridge,
creative builders of original decking systems & garden structures based in the heart of East Anglia.  If you're looking for a friendly service that will be sensitive to your requirements and budget, and a deck that will transform your garden and last long into the future, then you've come to the right place.

We believe that a successful project is the result of a close partnership between the client, the designer and building team. To achieve this, we ensure that you are involved in the creative process at every stage. Creating a deck is more than just a timber structure, it's a whole environment creating a scene; we can also assist you with all your soft and hard landscaping requirements.

  • We can help you develop your design ideas and concept to create a decking system that most complements your garden's features, aspect, views and existing greenery.
  • We undertake the entire project: ground clearance and preparation, the building of the decking system, and finishing and clearing, so that all you need to do is set out your sun loungers!
  • We can also plan and create the entire environment around your new decking, with landscaping, paths, trellising and fencing as well as soft landscaping, new plantings, beds, or water features.

Decking Design
When you call us to discuss your decking plans, we will discuss a range of issues with you relating to how you visualise the scheme, how you will use it, which features you would like to keep, enhance or add, and of course your budget.

Our designer will then draw an accurate colour plan to illustrate your deck in it's environment.  This will be  accurate in terms of scale, and will show existing and proposed plantings. paths and other features as well as the deck itself.  This will come with full costings for the project.

Plans are a vital part of our working system.  Apart from giving you a clear idea of the appearance, the spaces and orientation of the scheme, it also gives us a clearly definable goal to work to.  Working from plan also minimises room for error or misundertanding.

After the ideas are laid out on paper is often the first time an objective evaluation of the design scheme can take place.  At this stage you can add, alter or amend the design as you see fit, to help you get to your ideal decking scheme.  We will produce revised designs with revised costings after each amendment.

By the end of the design process you will be clear in your mind exactly how you want your garden to look.  Once the plan has been revised to it's final draft (this can take 2 or 3 drafts) and you have approved the final quote, we will start to organise the implementation of the plan.

If you are interested in our design service and would like to discuss it in more detail, please contact us.

Construction
We use a traditional grooved Scandinavian redwood decking planking which is 120mm x 28mm (5" x 1") planed with rounded edges. The timber is Osmose treated to prevent moisture retention and plant & insect growth.  Being copper-based, the treatment gives the deck a greenish hue which fades over time, and is guaranteed for 15 years.  In addition we coat all areas that have contact with soil with an acrylic bitumen paint, this allows the wood to breathe without letting moisture in.   Your deck can be attached directly to an existing structure via a 'wall plate', which is fitted with spacers to allow wall drainage.

Decking planks are laid with a 2mm gap to allow clear drainage, and under the deck we will lay a geotextile membrane to prevent the growth of weeds, if necessary. Each plank is cut to fit and pinned 4 times at every joist.  Balustrade is usually fitted at 1100mm according to building regs.

The structure is built from Osmose treated joists of between 150mm x 50mm and 250mm x 50mm, depending on the size of the Deck.  The newels (upright posts) are of 100mm x 100mm planed redwood with rounded edges.
lf you would like to discuss it in more detail, please contact us.

Timescale varies, depending on the size of the job, we'll give you an accurate idea of when we can start and the duration when we quote for your job.
